Foster Care and Adoptions

Redwood Community Services has been providing foster care services since its incorporation in 1995. Our Foster Care programs are designed to create a supported living environment for youth in the foster care system. Youth are placed with approved resource families, who are educated through a multi-faceted training program in order to prepare them for meeting the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of the youth in their care. To address the differing needs of the children and youth within the foster care system and the complexity of family dynamics, Redwood Community Services offers an array of foster care options.

Resource Families
A new family-friendly and child-centered caregiver approval process that combines elements of previous foster parent licensing/certification, relative approval, and approval for adoption and guardianship into a single approval process. While this new approval applies to all of these possibilities, each family’s preferences for the type of care they wish to provide are carefully considered. The RFA process improves the way caregivers (both related and non-related) are approved and prepared to parent vulnerable children/youth in foster care, whether temporarily or permanently, as all families receive the same information, training, and opportunities for support.

Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC)
Redwood Community Services has implemented a Therapeutic Foster Care program in Lake and Mendocino Counties and soon Humboldt County. Therapeutic foster homes are foster families that have been identified to care for extremely behaviorally/emotionally disturbed children who cannot function in a family home without specialized treatment and expertise. Therapeutic foster parents have specialized skills in managing these children. Often these homes have a pre-determined, designated intensive "package" of services that are delivered to every child placed in the therapeutic foster home. Therapeutic Foster Parents document their interventions with daily progress notes.  These services are billable to medi-cal.

Intensive Services Foster Care
Intensive Services Foster Care (ISFC) is designed to break the cycle of out-of-home placements through intensive treatment services in the resource family home. Resource parents support and nurture needy children and youth and act as a bridge between them and their family of origin, strengthening the community.

There are no unwanted children, just unfound families.

Redwood Coast Regional Center (RCRC) Level III & Level IV Services
Services provide Regional Center consumers with a stable, consistent, qualified environment where they receive positive support for their strengths, and nurturing care for their needs. This program design assures on-going staff training and professional weekly contact with foster parents so that the needs of the children and youth in their care can be met in a nurturing family environment as the least restrictive way to meet their physical, mental, and emotional needs.

Adoptions
Redwood Community Services is committed to each youth’s need for placement in a permanent family. In 2014, we received our adoption licensure allowing us to support our children, youth and families to finding permanency when reunification is not an option. Our primary focus for the children, youth and families we serve through foster care, is reunifying the children with their family of origin, a relative or through kinship care. For whatever reason, when permanent placement is not possible with the child's family, a relative or family friend in their community, Redwood Community Services offers foster parents the opportunity to adopt the child or youth in their care.
